News: Sword Art Online II in 2014

The reveal of Sword Art Online II was shown during the premiere of Sword Art Online: Extra Edition special, and the series website was promptly updated.  It will launch in 2014, but an exact date is not listed.  More details will most likely be provided after we move into the New Year.  The words "Phantom Bullet" is all that is given alongside the picture on the website.  If you're curious about seeing the video, check it out below:

It looks like things could get a little more techy in this next installment.  The video features a blue-haired girl loading and cocking a sniper rifle, going prone to aim down the sight.  Exactly what she's shooting at remains unknown as she pulls the trigger.  A close-up shows her stoic visage, and then cuts away to complete the show's announcement.  I'm not sure what to expect with this season 2; I've never read the light novels before, so I don't know if it covers what's to come.  The first half of SAO was compelling with the constant threat of dying nipping at the characters' heels.  It added suspense and intensity to a fight; one error and the person would be gone forever.  Also, the main romance between Asuna and Kirito kept carrying the viewer through the show's twist and turns.  You begin rooting for them and their survival.  On the other hand, the latter half lost most of its appeal, feeling tacked on to what would have felt complete at the end of the first arc.  The fact that the second antagonist's true motivation is sketchy and meaningless didn't help matters any either.

Even with the ending of SAO being somewhat shaky, I am genuinely curious where they plan to go with this next series.  I hope they focus on new characters rather than the old to keep things fresh.  I'm wondering how the world (real and in-game) have developed.  And guns are always a cool addition.
